The objectives of this study were to examine the consumption of WG- and SF-enriched burritos and cookies among elementary school-aged children and to perform a quality evaluation of all products. Children in grades K to 6 from a local elementary school consumed control (CTR) products made with refined flour along with the test products (TRT) over a 13-wk period. TRT burritos and cookies contained 51% and 100% WG. Children’s consumption was determined via plate waste. No significant differences in consumption between CTR and TRT burritos and cookies were found.

Young children who spend too much time in front of the television, the computer and video games might be at increased risk for high blood pressure, a new study suggests.
After smoking, being overweight or obese is one of the biggest cancer risks. But in a survey of nearly 4,000 people, only three per cent mentioned keeping a healthy bodyweight as something people could do to reduce their risk of cancer. This is according to a Cancer Research UK survey out today.
Canadian scientists have provided more evidence of a link between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of cancer.
Those who drank the most had a sevenfold increased risk of oesophageal (food pipe) cancer; an 80 per cent higher risk of bowel cancer; and a 50 per cent heightened risk of lung cancer.
Dr Benedetti described the findings, which appear in the journal Cancer Detection and Prevention, as “astounding”.

Fruit juice is one beverage that has seen a dramatic increase in consumer purchasing since the 1970s. While the beneficial effects of consuming diets rich in fruit and vegetables are well documented, the specific health effects of consuming fruit juice are less so. Further, the role of fruit juice in conditions such as obesity has also recently come under scrutiny, due to questions over how liquid calories affect subsequent energy intake. Limitations in the literature in this area include a lack of studies looking at different types of fruit juices and their effects on health, as well as studies that differentiate fruit juice from fruit and vegetable intake.

Researchers from Australia and The Netherlands constructed a mathematical simulation model to estimate the potential effects of reducing the exposure of 6- to 12-year-old US children to TV advertising for food on the prevalence of overweight and obesity. Model input was based on body measurements from NHANES 2003–04, the CDC-2000 cut-offs for weight categories, and literature that relates advertising to consumption levels and consumption to body mass. Based on literature findings, the model predicts that reducing the exposure to zero would decrease the average BMI by 0.38 kg/m2 and lower the prevalence of obesity from 17.8 to 15.2% for boys and from 15.9% to 13.5% for girls. When estimates are based on expert opinion, these values are 11.0% and 9.9%, respectively.
