A bowl of whole-grain cereal is as good as a sports drink for recovery after exercise. Research published in BioMed Central’s open access Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition has shown that the readily available and relatively inexpensive breakfast food is as effective as popular, carbohydrate-based ‘sports drinks’.

For the study, the German researchers randomly assigned 188 children to participate in the daily exercise program or follow the school’s regular curriculum of two weekly sports lessons. A year later, the percentage of overweight and obese children in the daily exercise group had fallen from 13 percent to 9 percent while it had risen from 11 percent to 13 percent in the group that did only the standard sports programs
The Swedish study lasted 18 months. It involved 120 obese and unfit women between the ages of 30 and 60 with a waist circumference of at least 88 centimetres. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, a control group that focused on walking and an intervention group that focused on cycling. The results show that a larger proportion of the women in the intervention group (39%) cycled two kilometres or more per day than the women in the control group (9%). And a positive side-effect was that car-driving dropped by 34 per cent.
Statewide weight loss competitions appear to be a potentially successful weapon in the battle against obesity. These programs can produce weight loss in large numbers of people at minimal cost, according to a new study from The Miriam Hospital and Brown University in Rhode Island, USA. Shape Up Rhode Island reduced the percentage of patients in the study who were obese from 39 percent to 31 percent.
