Black children who like f&v are at less risk of overweight

Food preferences play a central role in food choices and consumption. 341 black children (43% boys; 68% fourth graders) attending low-income, public elementary schools in southeastern Louisiana volunteered to participate. Height and weight were measured and they answered questions about their preferences for 38 different fruits and vegetables during the fall of 2005. There was a negative association between children’s mean f&v preference score and their body mass index for age percentile (P=0.01). Children who reported a very low preference for f&v were 5.5 times more likely to be categorized as at risk for overweight or overweight than were those who reported a high preference for fruits and vegetables (P<0.01). Revised healthy eating index

Diets that meet the least restrictive of the food-group recommendations, expressed on a per 1,000 calorie basis, receive maximum scores for total fruit (5 points), whole fruit (5 points), total vegetables (5 points), dark green and orange vegetables and legumes (5 points), total grains (5 points), whole grains (5 points), milk (10 points), meat and beans (10 points), and oils (10 points). The following negative aspects are also included in the new algorithm: saturated fat (10 points), sodium (10 points), and calories from solid fats, alcoholic beverages (ie, beer, wine, and distilled spirits), and added sugars (20 points). The new index can be used to monitor the diet quality of the US population and subpopulations, evaluation of interventions, and research.

Most adults get some exercise during the day

Many adults may be meeting experts’ 30 minute recommendation on exercise if all types of activity, from work and play, are counted, a study of Swedish adults hints. Researchers found that among 1,470 adults ages 18 to 74, nearly two-thirds were meeting the goal of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. Getting more people off the couch, they say, will take broad “social-ecological approaches” which essentially means making it easier for people to be active in their daily lives. That could include making it simpler for people to walk or bike – by building more sidewalks, for instance – or giving them more parks and recreational areas.
