Ten rye varieties grown in one location were analyzed for their contents of dietary fiber (arabinoxylan and beta-glucan) and phytochemicals (folate, tocols, phenolic acids, alkylresorcinols, and sterols) by healthgrain researchers. Significant differences were observed in the contents of all phytochemicals in whole grains and in the fiber contents in the flour and bran.

New book: Public Health Law
Oct 17
Public Health Law, first published in 2000, has been widely acclaimed as the definitive statement on public health law. Lawrence O. Gostin’s definition was based on the notion that government bears a responsibility for advancing the health and well-being of the general population, and the book developed a rich understanding of the government’s powers and duties while showing law to be an effective tool in the realization of a healthier and safer population. In this second edition, Gostin analyzes the major health threats of our times, from emerging infectious diseases and bioterrorism to chronic diseases caused by obesity.
The aim was to examine rates of weight-based teasing before initiation of school-based childhood obesity prevention policies in Arkansas and during the 2 years following policy implementation. At baseline, 14% of children experienced weight-based teasing by parental report. The prevalence of weight-based teasing did not change significantly from baseline in the 2 years following school-based policy changes. Children and adolescents most likely to be teased because of weight were those who were overweight, obese, white, female, and 14 years or older, as well as those teased for other reasons. Adolescent report of weight-based teasing yielded similar patterns.
We Need Better Research

If public health research does not progress beyond descriptive research to testing the effectiveness of interventions that can provide causal data, its contribution to evidence-based practice will not be realized. This paper examined the number and percentage of public health research publications over three time periods (1987–1988, 1997–1998, 2005–2006) for three preventive health issues: tobacco use, alcohol use, and inadequate physical activity.
New research from the US suggests that certain people may have a genetic predisposition to obesity because the reward centres in their brains respond sluggishly after eating, so to get more pleasure from eating they opt for foods denser in calories which makes them gain weight. The study was done by Eric Stice, psychology researcher at The University of Texas at Austin et al and it is published in the 17 October issue of Science. Obese people may have fewer dopamine receptors, so they overeat to compensate for this reward deficit.
Dawn Jackson Blatner is the creator of The Flexitarian Diet. She is a dietitian and she wrote the book: The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your Life. You can have the benefits of a vegetarian diet without having to follow all of the strict rules. Being a flexitarian is a more flexible, more realistic way to be a vegetarian. Studies have shown that nearly two out of three vegetarians don’t, or can’t, do it full-time.
Carbohydrates are an important part of a healthful diet. With type 1 or 2 diabetes, balancing insulin or medication with carbs and emphasizing carbs from fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk and yogurt is key. Families should learn how to follow a consistent carb meal plan or adjust insulin for carbs to help keep their child’s blood glucose close to target levels. The family’s RD or healthcare team can help them decide which meal planning method is best for their child.
