One heckuva healthy breakfast

In the December issue of CSPI’s Nutrition Action Newsletter there is a 3-page feature on whole grain hot cereals. ‘Oatmeal and beyond’ is the title. It’s a review of the coolest hot cereals in the US. The intro includes: ‘Face it. Hot cereals arn’t excately hot. But if they’re whole grain, not smotheres on sugar or salt you got yourself one heckuva healthy, cheap, and convenient breakfast’.

Unfortunately the newsletter is not available online. But you can sucscribe to the printed version or buy back issues here.

Great job, CSPI.

By the way. In the November issue CSPI gave the Starbucks oatmeal thums up and 5 stars.

Lad os starte den nye norm på danske arbejdspladser!

The validity and reliability of an instrument to assess children’s outdoor play in various locations

The aim of this study was to develop and test the reliability and validity of survey items that examine the frequency with which primary school-aged children play in particular outdoor locations. Parents reported the number of days their child spent playing in specified outdoor locations (i.e., yard at home, own street/court/footpath, and park/playground). Results suggest that the survey was generally a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the frequency with which children play in particular locations especially at home or in the street.

A good-quality breakfast is associated with better mental health in adolescence

836 Australian kids between 13 and 15 years had their mental health assessed using the Child Behaviour Checklist with higher scores representing poorer behaviour. A high-quality breakfast consisting of at least three food groups was consumed by 11 % of adolescents, while 7 % of adolescents did not eat breakfast. For every additional food group eaten at breakfast, the associated total mental health score decreased by 1.66. These findings support the concept that breakfast quality is an important component in the complex interaction between lifestyle factors and mental health in early adolescence.
