Workplace obesity program shows modest effects after just 1 year

Nine worksites were designated treatment sites and three control. At treatment sites, employees were provided enhanced access to healthy foods in vending machines and cafeterias, greater access to physical activity through walking trails and pedometer programs, dissemination of multiple health education materials, leadership training, physical activity and weight management programs, health assessments and individual consultations, and online behavior change programs. Researchers found that after one year, employees who participated in the environmental weight management interventions significantly reduced their blood pressure risk and maintained a steady weight when compared to employees at control sites.

The big apple just launched a new campaign to help New Yorkers make the most of the city’s calorie-posting rules. Under the New York City Health Code, chain restaurants are now required to post calorie counts for food items on menus and menu boards. The new ads make clear, that you don’t have to give up all indulgences to eat fewer calories. By ordering a diet soda and a small order of fries with your cheeseburger, for example, you can cut the caloric impact by half – from 1,250 to 670.

Fast food chains will now add calorie counts to menu boards at KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Long John Silver’s. This is fabulous news for health-conscious consumers. McDonald’s has no plans to expand nutrition data on menu boards. Nor does Wendy’s. Burger King has no plans “in the short term.” It’s too early to know the sales impact of calorie posting in New York City.

California First State to Pass Menu Labeling Law

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday signed landmark legislation that will put calorie counts on chain restaurant menus and menu boards. Though enacted in New York City, Seattle, and several other jurisdictions, California is the first state in the country to pass such a measure.
