The ISAFRUIT project with 300 scientists from 60 research and development institutions and SMEs, in 16 countries across Europe, the USA and New Zealand, embarked upon a mission to encourage increased consumption of fruit, to improve the health and well-being of the European population. Their work resulted in this special issue including the following articles: 1) Barriers to Fruit Consumption; 2) Trends in Fruit Consumption in 4 European Countries; 3) Health Benefits of Increased Fruit Intake; 4) The Role of Fruit in Prevention of Obesity; 5) Increasing the Consumption of F&V by School Children: Role for the European Union. In an experiment, researchers offered 131 four- to five-year-olds a plate of cookies after they had eaten a meal. They found that the children who ate more cookies were more likely to have certain variations of a gene linked to larger body size. So when it comes to cookies, some children really can’t help themselves.
This study compared moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and students without disabilities during inclusive physical education and recess. Students (7-12 years) wore a uniaxial accelerometer in school for 5 consecutive school days. Results indicated a significant difference between settings. Students with and without ASD spent a higher proportion of time in MVPA during physical education than during recess, relative to the amount of time spent in those settings.
