Physical activity questionnaire comprehension: lessons from cognitive interviews

This study was consucted in California with the aim to determine whether respondents share researchers’ understandings of concepts and questions frequently used in the assessment of usual PA behavior. Cognitive interviews revealed significant gaps between respondents’ interpretations of some PA questions and researchers’ assumptions about what those questions were intended to measure. Some sources of measurement error in self-reported PA may be minimized by additional research that focuses on the cognitive processes required to respond to PA questionnaires.

Physical activity may not be key to obesity epidemic

Researchers from Loyola University Health System and other centers compared African American women in metropolitan Chicago with women in rural Nigeria. On average, the Chicago women weighed 184 pounds and the Nigerian women weighed 127 pounds. Researchers had expected to find that the slimmer Nigerian women would be more physically active. To their surprise, they found no significant difference between the two groups in the amount of calories burned during physical activity.

Food labels to tackle obesity

The chairman of the Australian Government’s Preventative Health Taskforce, Professor Rob Moodie, said the taskforce will be assessing different approaches to food labelling, including moves in the US to include the calorie content of foods on restaurant menus. We need to work out what the best form of labelling is, the clearest form for the consumer, he said.The taskforce wants to halve Australia’s obesity rate by 2020 by taxing unhealthy foods, regulating sugar and fat content, and restricting junk food advertising, particularly to children.

The Change4Life campaign insulted diabetes type 1 patients

Type 1 is normally diagnosed in childhood and the causes are unknown where as type two which is mostly an adult disease triggered by obesity. This caused some trouble for the campaign. So now they decided to modify the advertising materials to make clear that obesity leads to type 2 diabetes. Good and clear communication is difficult.
