Danskerne vil have pesticider forbudt

Altinger skriver her til morgen, at det bør være helt forbudt for frugtavlere at bruge sprøjtegifte, når der skal dyrkes f.eks. æbler på de danske frugtplantager. Det mener et stort flertal af danskerne ifølge en ny meningsmåling, A&B Analyse har udført for Altinget Fødevarer. Ifølge målingen støttes et forbud af 74 pct. af de adspurgte, mens 18 pct. er imod og 9 pct. ikke ved, hvad de skal svare. Undersøgelsen er baseret på 911 besvarelser.

Researchers at the University of Washington and Intel have created two new cell phone applications, dubbed UbiFit and UbiGreen, to automatically track workouts and green transportation. The programs display motivational pictures on the phone’s background screen that change the more the user works out or uses eco-friendly means of transportation.

Ban on fast food TV advertising would reverse childhood obesity trends

A ban on fast food advertisements in the US could reduce the number of overweight children by as much as 18%, according to a new study being published this month in the Journal of Law and Economics (see www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/590132). The study also reports that eliminating the tax deductibility associated with television advertising would result in a reduction of childhood obesity, though in smaller numbers.

Obesity prevention in children and adolescents

Boyd Swinburn published his view on obesogenic environments, especially the food environment. This constitutes a “market failure,” signaling the need for government interventions with policies, programs, and social marketing. Food marketing to children is a central policy issue for governments to address, and comprehensive regulations are needed to provide substantive protection for children. The 2 major challenges are to ensure substantial funding to promote healthy weights can be scaled up to a national level and to ensure that policies are in place to support these efforts. The social and cultural shifts that support healthy eating and physical activity occur differentially. A positive public health approach encompassing environmental, regulatory, sociocultural, and educational strategies offer the best chance of reducing obesity.

Cardiovascular risk in children

Researchers from Basel in Switzerlandcarried carried out a cross-sectional analysis of 502 first and fifth graders and measured cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and PA and noted the neighbourhood (rural vs urban) environment. Outcome measures included BMI, sum of four skinfold thicknesses, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and a standardised clustered metabolic risk score. CONCLUSION: Reduced CRF, low PA and an urban environment are independently associated with an increase in metabolic risk markers in children.
