Starbucks to sell oatmeal

The whole-grain oatmeal is a new healthy menu item served hot in a cardboard to-go bowl. For $2.45, buyers also get to pick two of three mixes for the oatmeal: dried fruit, nuts or brown sugar. Executives expect the instant oatmeal to be the most popular new item. It will roll out with the promotional tag line: Make Morning Good Again. Schultz says they “cracked the code” on oatmeal, and its aroma does not detract from the coffee aroma in stores.

Sara Lee wants a bigger slice

Sara Lee has built the nation’s best-selling brand, but are struggling to make profit. They came up with one of the biggest innovations in the bread world in recent years: Soft & Smooth. A bread with 30 percent whole grains, it’s aimed at providing more nutrition than white bread but with white-bread texture. Hand-held computers can improve diet in those over 50

27 healthy americans aged 50 or over completed the 8-week study. Intervention participants used a PDA programmed to monitor their vegetable and whole-grain intake levels twice per day and to provide daily individualized feedback, goal-setting, and support. Veggi intake rose 1.5-2.5 servings/day and grains rose 3.7-4.5 servings/day.

Whole grain products lower glucose and insulin levels after meals

4 healthy men and 9 women in Sweden were given glucose solution, fermented whole-grain barley or fermented whole-grain oat. Blood samples were collected directly before the meals and 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 min after the start of the meal. Glycemic index and insulin index of meals were calculated. The mean blood glucose responses for both the barley and the oat meals were significantly lower than from the reference glucose load.

8 telephone counselings over 3 months increased vegetable intake by 67% and fruit intake by 71%. Whole grain servings per day rose from 1.0 serving per day, 6 months 1.4 servings per day (40% increase). This result is based on an uncontrolled pilot trial with 97 California adults.
