Children’s and parents’ perceptions of the determinants of children’s f&v intake in a low-intake population.

Children’s usual fruit and vegetable intake and its determinants were assessed through self-reports from the children (n 963) and their parents’ reports. Children reported lower availability and accessibility of fruits at home than did their parents, while the reports of children and parents for vegetables were more in agreement. The strongest determinants for fruit and vegetable intake according to the children’s reports were availability at home, modelling, demanding family rule and knowledge of recommendations. Interventions aiming to increase fruit and vegetable intake among children must target the parents.

Food environment, diet quality and weight status in children in Québec

Out of 201 children in grades 4-6 30% children were overweight and 34% obese. The 18 % of children who consumed three or more restaurant meals in the three days of recall consumed, on average, 2004 kJ (479 kcal) more energy daily than children consuming no restaurant meals and had higher intakes of fat, saturated fat, Ca and soda. Only 68 % of children reported often having fruits and vegetables in the home and 98.5 % of children consumed less than 5 fruits and vegetables daily.
