Katherine Hobson from U.S. News and World Report contacted nutritionists, dietitians, and nutrition scientists and asked them to brainstorm what they’d like to add, subtract, or change on food nutrition labels. Here are some of their ideas. They include better labeling of the whole grain content.

Such moves by the food industry may seem to be a step in the right direction, but ultimately makers of popular junk foods have an obligation to stockholders to encourage kids to eat more’”not less’”of the unhealthy foods that fuel their profits.

A new study shows that a low-carbohydrate diet changes hepatic energy metabolism. When carbohydrates are restricted, the liver relies more on substances like lactate and amino acids to form glucose, instead of glycerol. The findings are published in the November 2008 issue of Hepatology.
Lars-Henrik Krarup from Bispebjerg University Hospital in Copenhagen headed an international study showing that people who were physically active before having a stroke had less severe symptoms and better long-term outcomes when compared to previously inactive people who had strokes. The findings are published in the Oct. 21 edition of the journal Neurology.

The study, conducted by a team from the School of Public Health at East Tennessee State University, was expected to be published in the Dec. 1 issue of Cancer.
